Our History

The Story of Brattle Square started in 1917 when George Stavros and John Gomatos opened Gomatos Brothers Fresh Produce in Harvard Square. From the start, they enthusiastically sold flowers. Over time, the florist business thrived, and in 1973, Brattle Square Florist was officially born.

In 1915 Zedros’ grandfather George, and granduncles Steve and John, opened Gomato Bros. Fresh Produce in Harvard Square. The three Greek immigrants also ran a news stand (now Crimson Corner newsstand) and diner in a time when paying three rents was nearly unheard of, said the Zedros family. Approximately 100 years later, Zedros manages the shop he inherited with his mother Kate, a nurturing woman who can be identified by her purple turtleneck and brown bob haircut that curls over her wire-rimmed glasses.

Today, Manager Stephen Stavros, George Stavros's grandson, carries on his family legacy by owning the business. He can be found behind the counter most days, talking with the customers he has known for many years and welcoming new ones.

What truly sets Brattle Square Florist apart is our loyal customers—many of whom have been buying flowers from us for decades. Their continued support is the greatest honor we could receive. Over the years, we have won numerous awards, but nothing compares to the trust and appreciation of those we serve.
